Admiral Frank Beardsley returns to New London to run the Coast Guard Academy, his last stop before a probable promotion to head the Guard. A widower with eight children, he runs a loving but tight ship, with charts and salutes. The kids long for a permanent home. Helen North is a free spirit, a designer whose ten children live in loving chaos, with occasional group hugs. Helen and Frank, high school sweethearts, reconnect at a reunion, and it's love at first re-sighting. They marry on the spot. Then the problems start as two sets of kids, the free spirits and the disciplined preppies, must live together. The warring factions agree to work together to end the marriage.

- The party band in the movie is a Christian alternative rock band called Hawk Nelson.

- Danielle Panabaker originally tried to get the part of Christina but was changed back and forth and eventually got the part of Phoebe.

- Nicholas Roget-King originally auditioned for the part of Ethan. Slade Pearce also first auditioned for a part different to the one he ended up getting.

- Miki Ishikawa's part was originally written for a boy, but it was changed to a girl for her.

- Continuity: As the kids are coming out of their rooms after Joni practices her saxophone in the morning, you see Phoebe come out of her room twice.

- Continuity: After Christina dumps the bowl of watery trash on Nick, she turns and faces Phoebe. In the next shot, she is standing differently.

- Continuity: When Christina catches Phoebe kissing a boy, there is some sort of strap on her arm, in the next shot it is gone.

- Revealing mistakes: At the end of the movie when the camera pulls back to show the front yard and the wedding party, you can tell by shadows that the sun is shinning from the upper right hand corner. However, the right side of the yard is completely shaded even though there's nothing there to cast a shadow, thereby revealing that the shooting location had many trees, and that the ocean view was edited in.

Phoebe North: -after being woke up by joni playing the Saxaphone badly-Why do I suddenly feel like I'm in prison?
Christina Beardsley: Have the fashion police caught up with you?
Lao North: Snap! Up top girlfriend!

Phoebe North: Hey Christina.
Christina Beardsley: You lied to me, you said he was a loser!
Phoebe North: He is a loser.
Nick De Pietro: Hey!
Phoebe North: A very hot loser.
Nick De Pietro: Cool
Christina Beardsley: Thanks for the warning sis, I'll be sure to return the favor, first chance I get.
Nick De Pietro: She sounds sweet
[Phoebe looks at him odd]

[Pig burps]
Christina Beardsley: You are so dead!
Mick North: She's just a pig.
Christina Beardsley: Not the pig. You!
