Shark: Season 1 (2006-2007)
Episode: 17, Backfire
Original Air Date: March 29, 2007
Episode Recap:
When NARC officers open fire on two suspicious individuals in an SUV, one of the passengers who is cousins with the drug dealer but is a straight arrow high school student, ends up dead. The cops insist they only returned fire, and the suspect denies firing his gun at all. After hearing both sides of the story, Shark must determine who shot first and who is responsible for the student's death. A camera phone video surfaces and appears to support the cops story that they only reacted to someone in the car shooting, but then another video turns up that shows them tampering with evidence at the scene of the crime. Furious that he's been lied to by the police, Shark sets up a sting that he's certain will force them to tell the truth. Shark finally receives an honest account, but it's equally frustrating because the entire altercation was a series of unfortunate events. A car backfiring set off a nervous rookie who shot first, leaving his well experienced partner no choice but to plant evidence to avoid the scrutiny he was sure the shooting would lead to.
